In this video I answer a really important question: Is getting a business degree online really worth it?
Is an online business degree worth it?
In this article, we’ll discuss getting an online business degree and understand if it’s really worth it to get a business degree online. As you may know there are several benefits to online college but everyone has a different experience and each major is unique.
So let’s go over everything you should know to help you decide if you should or should not get a business degree online.
Do you need a business degree?
So the first question you need to ask yourself is do you actually need a degree to complete your career goals. There are many career paths that don’t require a degree or certification and especially if you’re going to be an entrepreneur, you may not really need a degree.
With all the free education online you should really consider if you absolutely require a degree. On the flip side, many people will get a degree just as a safety net and when you do get a degree you’ll have more options down the road if your career doesn’t go as planned. So before you go spending money on a new education just make sure to really consider if you actually need a degree or not and if it’s worth it.
Will you want networking opportunities?
You should also really consider the networking opportunity that traditional college offers. College is a time in your life when you can make lots of lifelong friends and the experiences you share together at college will create deep bonds. Those friendships tend to pay off in the future when you need a job or a place to stay or your traveling or you need advice etc.
Having a large network of quality people is always a great thing and making those connections in a natural way through social events in a college setting is the best opportunity to grow a future network. And online business school doesn;t really offer that.
Will your job pay for your education?
This is another thing you must consider because many companies will pay for further education like a bachelor’s or master’s degree. And if you can get your education paid for and then move up the ladder at your job then it’s a no brainer.
The thing is this, if you have an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree and you wanted to further your education and all you’re doing is coming home from work and watching Netflix, you might as well take some online classes and get that degree. You’ll be replacing dead time with productive time that will add lot’s of value to your career.
Always make sure to check with your company and completely understand the opportunity if they are willing to pay for your education. Many companies will require that you continue to work at the company for at least two more years after you complete your degree so just be aware of that.
Picking the right business school
You want to make sure you pick the right school because it matters. The best thing you can do is research all the schools with a business degree and try to find the best school that offers online classes at a price you can afford. Unfortunately, in the business world it will matter where you get your degree from. There are many great schools but there are some other schools where your degree won’t mean much in the real world. Try and find a credible traditional college that also has online programs so you can also take advantage of all of the campus amenities if you are local.
Are you self disciplined enough?
If you decide that an online business degree is worth it then you need to hold yourself accountable. Each class is different but a lot of teachers will give you all the work up front and then say you have a month or a week to finish the work. Then it’s entirely up to you to schedule your time and make sure you get the work done on time. It’s really easy to let things pile up.
