A lot of you guys have asked me about my experience in tech school, so today we talk about what it was like for me, and what I had to do to attend mechanic school.
In this video, the Humble Mechanic talks about his experience going to technical college for the automotive industry. He gives an honest opinion about all of it, the good bad and the ugly.
He starts off by explaining that before technical school he was working a retail job for about 65 to 75 hours a week and only making an hourly wage of about $4. And he hated it.
He explains how he never really grew up as a car person but he remembers he always loved to take things apart. Once he was old enough to get a car he started taking it apart and changing out the audio equipment and that’s what really got him interested in cars all together.
So he was working this job that he hated and he had a couple of friends that had gone to technical college so he was asking them about it and trying to figure out if it was a good idea to go to. He was also seeing commercials on TV for technical college so this started to make him curious.
So he eventually went to tour the campus at UTI and the only thing that was really holding him back was the money. He didn’t have $35,000 to spend on school at the time. And he wasn’t really qualified to get government help either.
So he ended up securing a private loan through the school but he’s pretty regretful about that because of the interest rates that he incurred. He would not recommend doing a private loan if you don’t have to. He ended up selling his car and just about everything he owned just to afford to go to school and he continued to sell everything he could.
“Some people say tech school is a waste of money and that you don’t learn anything. However, I was incredibly undereducated going into tech school. There were a few guys in my classes who I could tell were way advanced and probably didn’t need to be there”
He says that he wasn’t that well educated so he really had to study hard and learn all of this stuff and went in knowing as little as you could about cars and how they work. His program lasted one year and he says overall he got a ton of value out of it.
“ I was a horrible high school student. I barely graduated but I did really well at tech school and missed a 4.0 avaerge by just 1 point. I had like a 3.98”
However he did mention that it wasn’t all great. He had a couple really bad instructors that really didn’t care about educating their students. And he felt really frustrated about that but he worked harder to learn the material that he needed to learn so he could achieve his goals.
He said there were a lot of people in his class that didn’t take it seriously and acted like clowns but he kept focused and stuck to his work. He never used this stuff as an excuse to say that technical school doesn’t work or that it was a waste of money. He decided to use this negativity to motivate him to try harder and become a successful student.
“I would have never gotten a job in an auto shop if I didn’t go to tech school”
He goes on to mention that it’s not the same for everyone. Some people grew up with these skills and their fathers and uncles worked in the automotive field so technical school might not be the best choice for them unless they just need a degree to get a job.
For him, he had no prior experience and that’s why he remains so positive about technical college for becoming an automotive mechanic.
“I learned so much and it sounds cheesy but that was the foundation of my career.”
