I started looking at online colleges shortly after I had my first baby and then found Kaplan University. I am a Healthcare Aministration major and here’s what I think so far!
Online college experience in healthcare administration at kaplan university
In this video, a Kaplan University student shares her experience as an online student in the field of Healthcare Administration. She explains how after she gave birth to her first child she wanted to get educated. She first looked at other colleges but she found that Kaplan was really the school she liked the best.
At first before you apply to the university you connect with an education advisor and you talk about the type of degree that you want and they help you get on the right path. She said this was very helpful because she was able to basically explain her life story and what she wants out of a career and the education advisor was really able to help her understand how to make the right choices.
As an online student at Kaplan, her classes are structured a bit differently. Every week you have to register for your classes. They have set times for classes where you have to tune in online in what she describes as a chat room. You don’t have to talk or participate but you do have to join the “live” class. There is a powerpoint slide and your professor talks about your weekly assignments and schedule.
This is not typical of many other online colleges and she feels that this structure really helps her stay on track and more connected with her peers and her professors. During this time you’re able to ask questions and get clarity on everything that is due in the upcoming week. This makes it so you are not really self taught and you have a lot of interaction with your teacher.
“The setup is a bit different, the first day of the school week is a Wednesday and the last day of the school week is a Tuesday.”
She says the different class schedule is something that works really well for her. There are 10 weeks in a term and there are 10 different units – so each week is a different unit. It’s 10 weeks on and one week off.
In total, she will be attending online college for four years and getting her bachelor’s degree. The total cost of her online education will be around $60,000 to 65,000 and she’s even considering getting her Master’s while she is at it.
“Fortunately I was able to get FASFA and full PELL as well but she said it’s definitely not cheap!”
However due to the flexibility of online college and the fact that she has a full-time 40 hour a week job and a newborn baby, getting her degree online is the best choice for her. There’s also a lot of people who are older that take online classes because they have busy schedules but finally getting a proper education is important to them so it seems to be a good fit for people of all types.
“You really do have to be dedicated to online college because technically you can let your work pile up and wait until the last minute to do everything but you’ll find that is a terrible strategy.”
One thing that is clear, is that most online college students emphasize organization and motivation as the key factors to succeeding in your online classes. And most would agree that online classes are not easier and in fact, sometimes they are harder. You still study the same curriculum that is being taught on-campus and in many ways you have much less help with your work.
“I have read a lot of bad reviews about Kaplan online and the reason they left bad reviews is because the students didn’t commit their time to it”
There are a lot of people that complain about online classes which makes other people wonder if it’s actually worth it or not. And online colleges have gotten bad reputations in the past but we are starting to see that in 90% of the cases it’s really the students fault and not the college itself. When students don’t work to their full potential and end up getting bad grades they look for someone to blame and they often blame the school.
There are countless examples of online college students who have had success with their classes and they love the freedom of online schooling but we usually only hear the bad stories.
As with everything in life, if you are committed, dedicated, determined, and focused you will succeed and get the most value out of whatever you choose to do.
