Mechanic shares his thoughts on college, community college and trade school
In this video, we’ll hear from a mechanic and we’ll learn what he thinks about college, community college and trade school. And the reason he made this video is that he works with a lot of younger guys who don’t know exactly what they should do for their higher education.
What you shouldn’t do
His first piece of advice is to not go to college because it’s not worth going into a crazy amount of debt for it. Not only that, but he also claims that traditional colleges don’t guarantee you a good life at all. He only recommends going to college if it’s going to be free because someone else is paying for it.
What you should do
What he recommends the young guys that he works with is to go to community college because community college is much cheaper and you get a lot more options. You can take all types of classes in community college, you can learn how to be a mechanic, HVAC, welding, plumbing, you can really learn anything.
But you can also get real class credits that transfer to 4-year colleges if you decide that you want to go to college later on And at community college, you can get a great education for around five thousand dollars.
“When I was younger I went to trade school and I spent over $35,000 on my education. I just didn’t know better – and If I could go back I would have gone to community colleges because it gives you way more options.”
What most of his friends did, regardless of what they studied, they went to community college first to save money on college credits, and then they transferred to four-year colleges to finish their degrees. Some of his friends became lawyers and doctors and went on to have more “traditional” careers. But he says the same thing works for the trades and it gives you more options.
“If you go to community college for a trade and then you decide it’s not right for you, you’ll have the option to take other classes and transfer to a four year college”
And he goes on to explain how technical school or trade school can really limit your options if you decide to change your mind. Although it’s good to stay focused you really have no way out when you attend a technical school.
“When you go to technical school you go for one thing and that’s it. If you decide technical school isn’t the right fit for you, you can’t transfer your credits anywhere else.”
The upside of technical school
He does mention that having a one-track educational path can be good because of the focus and sometimes limiting your options is good because it can be less confusing. But he always recommends community college over trade school if your local community college has the right programs for you.
The best advice
“You should go get a job in the field that you want to be in. Start at the bottom and then enroll in your local community college to learn more about your trade.”
The reason you should get a job in your field first before you go to school is that you learn more when you have real experience to build off of. You’ll also have a better time in class because you’ll have great questions to ask.
The other reason is that experience always beats a degree. So he recommends that you get some experiences under your belt then get your education and get your degrees and then you’ll be much better off in your career.
